Enhanced Language Training

The Enhanced Language Training  programs, designed by Mohawk College Mississauga Campus, aim to assist international students improve their written and spoken English skills, which have been successfully increasing students’ confidence during their learning experience while facilitating a smoother transition to successful employment.

The  Free ELT core courses  include two modules:

  • Enhanced Language Training – Professional Conversation
  • Enhanced Language Training – Academic/Professional Writing

The Job-ready & Academic Workshops feature:

  • Proper Citation Workshop: enhance and consolidate students’ knowledge on APA citation style.
  • Public Speaking Workshop: learn techniques that help students become effective and confident public speakers.
  • Advanced English Grammar Workshop: learn English sentence structure and tenses in depth to better navigate professional/academic writings.
  • Zotero (Citation) Workshop: learn how to use computer software Zotero to generate accurate citation and reference list while boosting up productivity.
  • Lunch & Learn: have lunch with guest speakers who are industry veterans in different fields to gain a deeper insight into students’ future career paths.
  • Networking Skills Workshop: learn networking skills that will facilitate students’ future job hunting processes and expand their professional connections.

The English Clinic:

  • Functioning as Mohawk Mississauga’s pop-up style writing centre, students can do drop-in sessions or schedule one-on-one sessions for brainstorming, outline drafting, presentation preparation, as well as essay proofreading.

The ELT department not only provides academic services, but also hosts fun events, which now include:

  • Chill and Watch: students indulge in delicious snacks and watch English TV shows spanning from sitcoms to mysteries, followed by a Kahoot game that test them on their knowledge of English idioms;
  • Monthly birthday celebrations: students enjoy cakes, write down their birthday wishes, and network with their peers.

The ELT department operates the English Club – Comm. Squad:

  • Students enhance their communication skills through weekly seminars and discussion sessions.
  • Partake in advanced training sessions for public speaking and learn  debate techniques and participate in campus wide debate contests;
  • Students will facilitate and organize future TEDx events.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutors as student leaders, offer instruction to their fellow students. Their primary objectives include strengthening existing skills, expanding skillsets, and empowering mentees to achieve their utmost potential. This program provides opportunities for mentoring tailored to specific courses and skills.

Peer tutoring serves several essential purposes:

Enhances the student experiences by offering academic support to students (tutees) who may encounter difficulties in specific areas of study while simultaneously providing leadership opportunities for tutors.

Encourages peer networking, facilitating connections between students and fostering collaborative learning environments.

Empowers students to seek assistance when needed and showcases their skills, promoting a culture of mutual support and academic growth within the student community.

Eligibility Criteria for Peer Tutoring:

  • Maintain a minimum CGPA of 75%.
  • Achieve a minimum attendance rate of 70%.
  • Complete at least 3 courses and achieve a CGPA of 75% if you are a semester 1 student.
  • Participate successfully in application and interview process.
  • Reflect the attitude of empathy and a willingness to assist others.
  • Commit to dedicating 5 hours to peer tutoring.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a program or have recently graduated from a triOS | Mohawk Mississauga Campus Program.

Upon successful completion of a semester as a Peer Tutor, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Seal of Co-Curricular Record added to your student transcript, enhancing your academic profile.
  • A reference letter from a triOS staff member, valuable for Canadian employers seeking candidates with strong references.
  • Participating mentors may receive gift vouchers based on the performance of their mentees, recognizing their dedication and impact.
  • Recognition on the college’s social media accounts, showcasing your involvement and contributions.
  • An opportunity to directly network with college staff, instructors, and management, fostering professional connections and relationships.
  • Enjoy in-person lunches or dinner treats from the SSA and EM team, acknowledging and appreciating your efforts as a Peer Tutor.

Study Groups

Study groups will be conducted at fixed times which will provide students with an opportunity to meet their instructor in a group setting to obtain clarifications or further guidance on assignments, projects, difficult concepts.
